The history of Knorr® is a story of passion, exploration, and food innovation.
High quality is our food philosophy – one that’s been years in the making. Our story starts back in 1838, when Carl Heinrich Knorr opened the first Knorr® kitchen in Heilbronn, Germany, supplying chicory to the coffee industry.
He began to experiment with drying vegetables and seasonings, to preserve nutrition and flavour. In 1910 we unveiled something really exciting; the first Knorr® Bouillon cube (bouillon is French for broth) which later became known as the Knorr® Stock Cube. Now families could enjoy delicious dishes at home without the need to make stock from scratch. This humble little product proved a hit.
The business was later taken over by Carl Knorr's two sons (Carl Heinrich Eduard Knorr & Karl 'Alfred' Knorr), which led to the launch of the first Knorr® dried soups across Continental Europe by 1979.
Always searching for the best flavours
Carl Heinrich’s passion and innovation lives on through our Knorr® Chefs and today Knorr® products are available around the world. In fact, Knorr® products are now enjoyed by 320 million people worldwide every day and still carry the iconic signature of Carl Heinrich Knorr, with whom it all began.
Today our kitchens are playgrounds to hundreds of real chefs – passionate experts working together to hone recipes that help you serve up tasty meals time and again. We pride ourselves on a genuine understanding of local flavours, providing great tasting favourites and helping you sample authentic cuisine from other cultures.
Knorr History – Ireland
Knorr made its memorable entrance into the Irish market with the introduction of the iconic Knorr Stock Cube. Building upon its success across Europe, Knorr expanded its reach to Ireland, offering a variety of flavours that quickly became household staples. The brand’s early popularity in Ireland was driven by its promise of enhancing everyday cooking with simple yet flavourful products.
By 1959, Knorr had firmly established its presence in Ireland with the opening of a dedicated facility, ‘The Goldenbridge Factory’, for the production and distribution of Knorr Soups, signifying its commitment to the Irish consumer market. Irish families particularly enjoyed flavours like Oxtail, which are still cherished in Ireland today, along with newer additions to the range.
In the 1980s, Knorr continued to innovate specifically for the Irish market. This era saw the introduction of unique products such as specialized Stock Cubes, Meal Makers and Sauces catering to local tastes.
Throughout its history in Ireland, Knorr has become synonymous with quality and flavour, consistently adapting to the changing tastes and needs of Irish families. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to blend international culinary innovation with a deep understanding of local preferences. Circa 2005 Knorr production ceased at ‘The Goldenbridge Factory’, but Knorr continues to be supported and loved by the Irish consumers and continues to expand its product range year by year.
