There is something therapeutic about a nice hot bowl of sour soup. Family matriarchs often consider soup, especially ones like Sinigang, to have healing qualities. Whether this has some scientific backing to it or not, a sip from a nicely soured Sinigang na Hipon clears up any clogged sinuses.
Similar to the Thai Tom Yum, the Sinigang can be prepared using pork, fish, beef ribs, and shrimp. Over the years, this sour stew has seen many unique interpretations. Innovative chefs have begun using pineapples, watermelon, and strawberries as souring agents.
At the end of the day, both home cooks and pro chefs still reach for sampalok more than any other fruit. But let’s be honest, no one has the time these days to do it the way our lolas would. To save you the trouble of having to peel, mash, and strain tamarind fruit, a pack of Knorr Sinigang na Sampalok Mix is your best friend for this cooking adventure. To make Shrimp Sinigang, try out this recipe we’ve put together.
Sinigang na Hipon Ingredients:
- 4 cups rice washing
- 1 pc medium onion, quartered
- 3 pcs tomatoes, quartered
- 500 g. fresh medium shrimps, with head, shell, and tail intact
- 1 pc long green chili, slitted
- 1/2 pc radish, peeled and sliced diagonally
- 1 pc medium eggplant, sliced diagonally
- 3 pcs okra, sliced diagonally
- 4 pcs sitaw, sliced into 3 inches
- 1 cup kangkong stalks, sliced into 3 inches
- 1 cup kangkong leaves
- 1 (20g) pack Knorr Sinigang sa Sampalok Mix Original
Cook
Step 1 :
Begin by using the water you used to wash rice and pour this into a pot together with onions and tomatoes. Bring to a simmer for about 8 minutes.
Step 2:
Throw in the shrimp, long green chili, radish, eggplant, and okra. Let this simmer until cooked through. Make sure that you have removed the black veins from the back of the shrimp with the help of a sharp paring knife and that you have washed the head in cold running water because this is where the shrimp’s digestive waste passes. Skipping this step results in a mildly earthy and bitter aftertaste in the shrimp.
Step 3
Long beans, kangkong stalks, and leaves are added at the last minute before pouring in the Knorr Sinigang sa Sampalok Mix Original. Give this a gentle stir and allow to simmer for a few minutes. If you want more of that asim kilig goodness, try using 1 (40g) pack of Knorr Sinigang sa Sampalok Mix Original.
Step 4
Sinigang na Hipon is ready to be served. With a saucer of patis and calamansi and steaming hot rice, what more can your family ask for?
It does not have to be rainy, nor do you need to be under the weather to enjoy a bowl of Sinigang na Hipon. The great thing about this soup is the sour flavor profile lends a refreshing taste that allows it to be enjoyed even during the sweltering summer months.
This is probably why many beach trips are accompanied by a feast of BBQ pork, grilled fish, Chicken Adobo, eggplant salad, and a pot of Sinigang. Best prepared on-site, a Shrimp Sinigang recipe will never fail as long as you use fresh seafood, veggies, and premium ingredients.
