During the rainy season, kids are more prone to ailments, such as the common cold, sore throat, and influenza. Typhoid fever, cholera, and dengue hover during this period, too. But did you know that prevention against these health woes can start with simple solutions at home? Boost your kids’ immunity by ensuring they get enough sleep and feeding them nutritious food, starting with this laswa recipe.
The Ilonggo dish is a simple soup of boiled vegetables. The prep work entails peeling and slicing produce. (Pro tip: most skins and peels are rich in vitamins and minerals, too!) But other than that, you’ll only need to gather your ingredients in a pot of water and cook them until tender. It’s that easy!
Laswa’s flavor comes from the sweetness of fresh kalabasa, gabi, and tomatoes. The tanglad, malunggay, and alugbati lend citrusy notes, while the ginger imparts a subtle spice. A Knorr Shrimp Cube adds linamnam, and the okra helps achieve a thicker consistency. But combined, all these ingredients make this soup a nutritional powerhouse. Ready to reap its benefits?
Laswa Recipe Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 1pc Knorr Shrimp Cube
- ½ cup gabi, peeled and cubed
- 1 small pc ginger, peeled and sliced thinly
- 2 pcs tomatoes, sliced and deseeded
- 1 pc red onion, peeled and sliced thinly
- 2 pcs tanglad (white part only), pounded and bundled
- 1 cup kalabasa, peeled and cubed
- 4-5 pcs medium okra, cut in half
- 1 bundle alugbati, leaves picked
- 1 stalk malunggay, leaves picked
- 2 stalks leeks, sliced
How to Cook Laswa
Step 1
Fill a medium pot with water and bring to a boil. Add Knorr Shrimp Cube and mix until completely dissolved
Step 2
Add gabi, ginger, tomatoes, onions, and tanglad. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to simmer. Cook for 3 minutes.
Step 3
Add kalabasa and okra. Cook until gabi and kalabasa are tender.
Step 4
Add alugbati leaves, malunggay leaves, and leeks. Simmer for 1 minute. Serve hot.
Done in 30 minutes! Remove your pot from the stove as soon as a fork can pierce through the gabi and kalabasa. Make sure not to overcook your vegetables – a mushy and slimy soup will turn off young appetites.
Aside from the fresh ingredients featured in this laswa recipe, you can also include your kids’ other favorites. Eggplant, kangkong, patola, and baby corn are worthy picks. For more heft, add fried fish, like in the Ilocano dinengdeng. Or you can mix in bagoong to make the bulanglang of Batangas. Whichever version you prepare, ensure it’s something your kids will enjoy. Prioritize their health this season and help boost their immunity to fight bacteria and viruses.
