Crispy and Juicy Lechon Kawali Recipe to Make Any Day of the Week

Ordering Lechon on the regular? Too expensive! Learn how to make restaurant quality Lechon Kawali from home with this recipe.

As a pork-loving nation, there’s no place in the Philippines where one has not heard of Lechon Kawali. It’s a signature dish that appears on many tables during a Filipino fiesta, usually accompanied by spicy vinegar or the traditional Liver Sauce. Its uber crispy skin with tender meat is where this dish shines the most. In addition to its addicting taste, it’s relatively easier to be cooked at home, compared to Lechon de Leche which has to be spit-roasted.

Lechon has Spanish origins, heavily influenced from the time Spanish colonies made their way to the Philippines and shared their ways of preparing the meat, which gradually evolved to what it is today. The Crispy Pork Belly has a likeness to the famous Ilocano dish, Bagnet, but is different due to the amount of times it’s deep-fried. However, the results are comparable as the pork turns out crispy, juicy, and golden brown.

Every day is a good day to enjoy Lechon Kawali. If you’re budget conscious and trying to reduce your food delivery expenses, here’s the perfect recipe to add to your list.

Lechon Kawali Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg. pork belly, sliced
  • Water to cover
  • 1 pc Knorr Pork Cube
  • 1 head garlic, mashed
  • Knorr Liquid Seasoning, as needed
  • Oil for frying

Step 1

To make a really juicy and flavorful Crispy Pork Belly, begin by tenderizing the pork in a pot filled with water, garlic and Knorr Pork Cube. Cook this at low heat and until the pork is fork-tender.

Step 2

Next, remove the pork from the broth and drain it well before giving this a good sprinkle of Knorr Liquid Seasoning.

Step 3

Now that we have a well-flavored chunk of pork, deep fry it in some pre-heated oil and cook until the pork is brown and crisp.

Step 4

Your family will surely do the happy dance when you serve this Lechon Kawali to them. Imagine if you serve this with their favorite condiments. More rice please!

To guarantee a crackling puffed skin, grab a cooking thermometer and use it to monitor the oil temperature. Ideally, keep it between 163°C-204°C. Once you’ve perfected the deep-frying technique, this sinfully good dish will satisfy your cravings. The best thing is it’s considered a budget-friendly meal and tastes just as good (if not more) than your local Lechon joint.
